EECS Graduate Brochure
At the University of Kansas, our graduate programs focus on
advancing the state of knowledge through research and educating students to
become the next generation of researchers and educators in their field. For
this reason, our goal is to recruit and admit students with the aptitude and
motivation to excel in the fields of Electrical Engineering, Computer
Engineering, and Computer Science.
Our University and Department
Founded in 1864, the University of Kansas serves as a major
comprehensive research and teaching institution as well as a center of
learning, scholarship and creative endeavor. KU is currently home for over
20,000 undergraduate students and 5,000 graduate students from Kansas and around the world.
The main campus consists of 950 acres atop historic 'Mount Oread' in the city of Lawrence, with a population of 85,000 in northeast Kansas. KU is less than one hour away from Kansas City, to the east, and from Topeka, the state capitol, to the west.
The EECS Department began as the Electrical Engineering Department
in the School of Engineering over one hundred years ago in Marvin Hall. The EE
Department added Computer Engineering in the 1980s to become the ECE Department.
The Computer Science Department was created in 1965 in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and merged with ECE in 1993 to form the EECS Department.
The EECS Graduate Program offers M.S. degrees in Electrical
Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Computer Science; Ph.D. degrees in
Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science; and the D.E. degree in Electrical
Engineering. The department has 35 full-time faculty members and 11 full-time
staff members. We currently have approximately 230 graduate students enrolled.
Facilities and Research
The EECS Department moved into its new home in Eaton Hall in
Fall 2003. This 80,000 square- foot building is named after Robert J. Eaton,
former chairman of Chrysler Corporation, who together with other alumni and
friends of KU donated $15 million towards the construction of this new
building. Our faculty and students also have extensive research space on west
campus in Nichols Hall, home of the Information and Telecommunication
Technology Center (ITTC), the primary research center for the department.
The department's research volume has continued to be very
strong and with research expenditures of over $5.5 million annually. This
funding enables us to constantly upgrade our research equipment and provide
support to over 100 Graduate Research Assistants. The department also funds
approximately over 60 Teaching Assistants and Graders.
EECS faculty and students lead or participate in over 80
research projects funded by major agencies such as NSF, NASA, DARPA, the Air
Force, the Naval Research Laboratory, NIH, and industrial research with
regional high technology companies.
Research Accomplishments
Research, along with education, is a top priority with our
faculty. Faculty members have been very successful in obtaining external
research funding, resulting in over $32 million in research and development
funds over the last five years. This high level of support has provided a
basis for strong collaboration between faculty and graduate students, and has
resulted in numerous journal and conference publications, as well as several U.S. patents.
